New Instruments

The Department has been fortunate to expand its instrument holdings over the past five years. Two back-to-back NSF-MRI (Major Research Instrumentation) grants helped us put in place a Velos Pro LCMS and a Bruker 400 MHz NMR, under the leadership of Dr. Wendy Cory, Dr. Justin Wyatt and Dr. Tim Barker.  A joint MUSC-CofC electron paramagnetic resonance instrument was also installed.  These three instruments alone have a value of $1,000,000, bringing the total value of our holdings to an estimated $2.5 million. Other grants and CofC funds have allowed us to add a Raman spectrometer, a dynamic light scattering system, a confocal microscope, an AFM, several HPLCs, and multiple FPLCs. Instruments in the department are always dual-purpose, being used heavily in the summer for undergraduate research but also throughout the year in our academic lab courses. We are very fortunate to have a talented instrument manager on staff, Dr. Stephanie Boussert, an expert in mass spectrometry who has been essential in leading the installation, training and maintenance of the new NMR.
