Undergraduate Programs
Links below direct students to information from the Registrar about programs of study in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry (2023-2024 catalog year year). The sequences of courses outlined in the Major Roadmaps are suggested as ideal, although students who decide later in their academic career to major in Chemistry or Biochemistry may need to alter their schedules. If you have concerns regarding your ability to meet the requirements outlined below, make an appointment with your advisor. Summer courses may be available to help you catch up on your courses if you are behind.
If you are unsure if a chemistry or biochemistry degree is best for you, you can use this sheet to compare degree requirements for a B.S. or B.A. in either Chemistry or Biochemistry. The requirements for a minor in Chemistry are also summarized. Our B.S. degrees are certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Major in Chemistry
PRE-PROFESSIONAL, PRE-MEDICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL and FORENSICS PROGRAMS. These programs lead to either a B.S. or B.A. degree in Chemistry.
Major in Biochemistry
This program leads to a B.S. degree in Biochemistry and includes 44 hours of coursework in chemistry. The Program includes both chemistry and non-chemistry courses which will prepare the student well for either a career in biochemistry or a career in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. In the first two years of study, the program is quite similar to that proposed for the B.S. in Chemistry with the addition of 16 credit hours of biology.
Minor in Chemistry
It is possible for a student to major in another discipline and minor in chemistry. Pre-med students usually take a year each of general chemistry and organic chemistry courses, plus at least one semester of biochemistry. By this time, only one additional course and lab (Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry, CHEM 220/220L) to fulfill the requirements for a minor in chemistry. The option to minor in chemistry becomes even more attractive, because it increases their chances for full-time or part-time employment after graduation, even if they are assured of admission to a graduate or professional school program.
Chemistry Teacher Education Program (Grades 9 - 12)
Students wishing to pursue teaching at the high school level, in addition to completing a B.A. in chemistry, also complete a minor in secondary education within the Department of Foundations, Secondary, and Special Education in order to meet certification requirements. The Elizabeth M. Martin Award is presented annually to the outstanding graduating chemistry major pursuing a career in secondary education.
